Black Angels Over Tuskegee

Guest Blogger: Atika Ghumman

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, we attended a Broadway show called Black Angels Over Tuskegee with the BCCP. It was an amazing opportunity to learn about the Tuskegee Airmen who were African American pilots during World War II.  I thought the show gave great historical background during the war. One of my favorite parts of the play was how most of the men kept secrets. One of the men was married, another brought records along with him, and lastly another one had these epileptic attacks out of nowhere. The significance of the play was to let the audience and myself know that everybody is equal and can become whatever they want. The whole point was you shouldn’t judge somebody by their color or how they look. It is the inside that really matters.

Blue Screen Fun

Did you know that weathercasters don’t actually see the map behind them? They stand in front of a blue or green screen and the weather forecasts are incorporated afterwards. Here is Whitman’s weathergirl Miah having some fun with the weather. We also have a lesson in Jamaican slang right before we are magically transported to Jamaica for the quickest dance party in history. Finally, the Whitman crew drives through the Hollywood Hills spotting celebrities. Anything is possible with a blue screen!

We ♥ buttons!

You may have noticed a lot of 7th and 8th graders walking around covered in buttons, on their bags, jackets, even in their hair.  My favorite part of this activity is how many students created buttons as gifts for their sisters, brothers, teachers and neighbors.  Thank you Isabel for letting us borrow the button-maker!

Belle And Beau of the Ball Gown and Tuxedo/Suit Donations

Belle And Beau Flyer

April 1st 2012 through May 14, 2012 the BCCP will collect dresses, suits (tuxedos), shoes, make-up and accessories for our third annual “Belle & Beau of the Ball”. We will have the Prom dress giveaway on Tuesday May 15th, 2012 and Monday May 21st the Suit/Tuxedo fitting. These exciting events provide high school seniors with Prom Dresses and Suits. Many students find it impossible to attend their high school prom because of the excessive expense. Your contribution will allow many young men and women to participate in a special evening meant to reward them for their academic achievements and success. We
encourage everyone who has a dry cleaned prom or evening dress, a formal suit or tuxedo; gently worn shoes or accessories and unopened make-up to consider contributing them to this memorable occasion.

Donations may be dropped off at the Brooklyn College Art Lab, Brooklyn College Roosevelt Hall, Room 301R (press 3R within the elevator) Brooklyn, NY 11210; Monday through Friday from 10am – 6pm and
Saturday, 12noon – 4pm or by mailing to the address above, attention to Sheena Minott or Denise Paige.
