BCAL Saturday- Butterfly Project

At BCAL we made butterflies to represent the children that were lost in the Holocaust. These butterflies were sent to The Holocaust Museum in Texas where the butterflies will eventually compose a breath-taking exhibition scheduled in the Spring of 2014. They will be put up in a gallery where everyone can notice all that has passed away.

if I could fly i’ll be closer to GOD,

if I could fly i’ll be so high,

Man I wish I had wings so I could try.

A Poem by Elie Mbys-Davidson

I, child of the pouring rain
Whose misery was born but lost in pain
Yet was found and tossed in vain
Am now to dwell in a land among the sane

I, Father of the mud that never dries
Am gifted with the power to mask dishonesty with lies
Now I’m locked in chains that are all but insincere
And I cringe and cower, paralyzed in fear

I, child of the rain that isn’t mine
Cry, when the somber skies let sorrow shine
So let my weep be heard in the darkest cry
And let my truth be found where the darkest lie

Maya and Global Potential Visit New Utrecht!

It was an action packed day at New Utrecht! We did our mid-year screening of all the wonderful projects we have been working on, Maya visited, showed us her work and even gave us a private concert. She gave us such good advice and inspired us with her singing. Representatives from Global Potential, the program Mirka was accepted to, also came and spoke about their program. To top it all off, Steve, the Deputy Director of the BCCP visited. And he brought cookies!

Project Peace, Boys, Girls, Following the Script and Gender Roles

Project Peace analyzes gender, from bad boys to good girls, from nice guys to fast chicks, teens discuss the gender roles to which young men and women are too often confined.

We checked out the words of real teens from the spoken word smash series Brave New Voices. You can check it out too:

1. “Thinking About You” by Mike addresses teenage love from the perspective of a smitten teen male.

2. “That Girl” by Alysia explores how young woman are (mis)treated in relationships and how they might be able to empower their selves.

Project Peace’s own Jocelyn gives her insights on gender roles, media and teens today. Check it out!
