Multiple award-winning, singer/song-writer Maya Azucena came to the BCCP Erasmus program where she met with students and performed for them.  Maya grew up in Brooklyn, NY  and still lives in the Flatbush community.  Students were able to talk to Maya about her childhood in Brooklyn, her amazing career and the endless possibilities the students can have as well.

After discussions, Maya performed three of her songs. The students were captivated by Maya’s voice, presence and spirit which lit up the classroom.  At the end of her performances students were all singing  a song they created  with Maya.

During Maya’s performance, student Petronella Blackman whispered “she felt like crying.”  When asked why she replied “because her voice is so beautiful.” 

And beautiful this experience was!

The sun was shining and the weather prevailed. Many of us had to overcome some ice anxiety, but after some help from our friends, some slips and slides, and lots of laughter, we all managed at least a few loops around the rink. Thank you Miss Sheena for organizing such a fun trip!

He also told us that the daffodils were being planted all over the city as a tribute to the 9/11 victims. It was nice to contribute to this unique memorial.

We prepared lunch, served the seniors, and were on dish duty! The best part of the day was hearing the stories they had to tell. It was a fun day for both the students and the seniors.

Instead of throwing away his grandfather’s old truck, he decided to make a moving farm out of it. He has made a documentary film about his exploits and drives around the city educating people on the benefits of organic farming, including better tasting food, saving money, and not wasting food. And, it’s not as hard as it looks! When asked if anyone had ever stolen anything from the truck, he said, yes, a plant. But it was returned the following week! Find out more at www.truck-farm.com. It's a jungle in there. While his truck is parked in the urban jungle, people have been adding their own additions to the truck farm, including many toy animals, including this tiger. Roaaar!
